SPB Mobile Shell 5.0 debuts with Android, Symbian support
February 15, 2010 by gizmo
We’d already caught a glimpse of it on Toshiba’s new TG02 handset, but SPB Software has now gotten fully official with SPB Mobile Shell 5.0, which will be available to consumers and OEMs alike. The big news with this one is that SPB has added support for both Android and Symbian in addition to Windows Mobile, all of which will be able to take advantage of a spiffy new 3D engine and a new “natural interaction engine” that apparently has full multitouch support. Other additions include some 3D widgets, and an array of tightly integrated social networking features, including Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin. Still no indication of a price or release date for the consumer version, unfortunately, nor is there any official word on any other phones that will come with it pre-installed.
[Thanks, Srle]

Arizona school bus gains WiFi, students suddenly chill out and get productive

Who woulda thunk it? Giving WiFi to fidgety students on a bus actually makes them more productive. Nearly three years after an Arkansas school launched a trial that delivered laptops, iPods and wireless internet to a bus, an Arizona school district is discovering the merits of such a system — though with this one, there stands a good chance for it to go well beyond the “pilot” phase.

Motorola ‘jumped the gun’ with details of Droid’s Android 2.1 update

Turns out all that excitement and frothing at the mouth was for nothing, as Motorola’s surprisingly nippy move to Android 2.1 on the Droid isn’t going to be all that rapid after all. The Moto Owners’ Forum manager has admitted that a few trigger-happy souls rushed out the details of the Droid’s upcoming OS update ahead of time, and the current situation is quite as it was before this news: your Droid will be chomping down on an Eclair , just not as soon as you might have been led to hope. The original source of the belief that the update will be hitting this week was Moto’s Facebook page, but PC Mag ’s sleuthing has revealed that the position has now changed to “soon” over there as well

Great news for you Motorola owners out there as it has been reported recently that the software is going to upgraded later this week. The announcement was made on their official Facebook page, and claims that the over the air software update will bring the Droid software up a peg or two towards the Google Nexus One, although some features wont be present. The Facebook announcement really just played with us as it gave no information on any features that will come with the upgrade

Navigon keeps MobileNavigator iPhone app fresh with 3D terrain views, Facebook / Twitter integration

Hey, software engineers of all shapes and sizes — are you keeping an eye on this? Navigon is releasing yet another significant update for its continually improving MobileNavigator iPhone GPS app, and at this point, we reckon these guys and gals should get some sort of medal for pursuing innovation on an existing product rather than leaping to “the next best thing.” The latest refresh adds in three primary features: 3D terrain views, a 3D panorama view ($9.99 extra) and in-app connectivity with Facebook and Twitter. As you’d expect, the latter enables users to broadcast current position, destination and ETA to social media outlets, which should make existing Foursquare addicts overwhelmed with joy. Version 1.5.0 also throws in MyRoutes, which is said to analyze your driving habits, patterns, location and time / day in order to provide “up to three routes clearly displayed in-map with ETA, distance and driving times for each.” Best of all? It’s just $69.99 ($20 less than normal) until February 15th, while the real-time traffic add-on is reduced $5 to $19.99 for the same duration.
