Remember those mind-melting Recon Instruments goggles that we caught wind of late last year? Admit it — you never, ever expected those things to actually make it to market. Despite your pessimism, it seems as if those very specs are indeed making a beeline to the consumer realm, with Zeal Optics jumping in, working a bit of magic and relabeling ‘em Transcend

I need to find a gift for my software engineer gadget man. Is the tom tom a good one or does he need better?

He already has everything from the latest iPod, mobile phone, 3 laptops, cameras and more. I’d like to find him a nice GPS to add to his collection, but I want it to be something that he will really like and use. I heard good feedback about the Tomtom – any others worth investigating?

How would you change HTC’s HD2?

From a pure specification standpoint, it’s hard to knock HTC’s HD2. Scratch that — it’s impossible to knock the HD2. A 1GHz Snapdragon CPU is just the tip of the iceberg, with the icing on the cake being the 800 x 480 resolution display, 5 megapixel camera, GPS and a downright stunning overall design. Unfortunately, phones are made or broken by the software that’s loaded on, and Windows Mobile 6.5 isn’t exactly the most nimble mobile OS on the market right now. That said, we’re confident that more than a few of you have unloaded your savings accounts in order to posses one of the sexiest cellular telephones this world has ever seen, and now that the deed is done, we’re eager to hear your opinions on how the phone really stacks up. Are you happy with the performance? Did you expect it to be snappier given the monstrous CPU? Would you have held out for WinMo 7 if Sir Patience would’ve allowed you? No need to go easy on anything — tell it like it is in comments below.

Panasonic's geotagging DMC-ZS7 superzoom compact gets handled

It’s been just a few days since Panasonic took the wraps off its update to the DMC-ZS3 that we liked so very much, the new DMC-ZS7, and Zumo Blog has been already given the opportunity to take a few pictures of one in the wild. The changes here are mostly evolutionary, with the same impressive 25 – 300mm 12x zoom lens on the front and the same AVCHD Lite 720p recording mode. New, though, is a GPS module nestled on top, capable of automatically tagging your photos, the SD slot can now accept SDXC cards, and it looks like the mode dial has been moved to a more natural position left of the shutter release. Still no word on price, but expect this one not to fall far from its predecessor’s $399 MSRP.

Aerotel GeoSKeeper looks stylish, keeps mummi from wandering too far away

Have a grandmother or grandfather who tends to go for afternoon walks and somehow winds up on the other side of town? Does that town happen to be in Finland? Aerotel GeoSKeeper system could be your saving grace, a wrist-worn cellphone and GPS combo device that allows for others to keep tabs on the location of the wearer. It was announced back in 2008 and is now going live in Finland courtesy of EcoTec, where families can set up safe zones and receive alerts whenever the wearer decides to wander outside of them, which is reassuring — so long as you’re not the one wearing the thing. Calls can be made to doctors or family with the press of a button should something go wrong, and apparently you can even receive text messages somehow. The one thing it can’t do? Tell time. If you’re going to make someone wear something like this, the least you could do is build a watch into the thing!
