Not too long ago we saw a leaked image of what was reportedly the Motorola MOTOSPLIT and Android platform smartphone which is presumed to be destined for the AT&T network sometime in the third quarter of this year. Well now the guys over at android community have another supposed image of the Motorola MOTOSPLIT, but this time showing the QWERTY keyboard, which according to their source that wants to remain anonymous can be a numeric keyboard or take any layout. The Motorola MOTOSPLIT keyboard is a two-way split keyboard that has no tactile feedback but appear to be finger friendly cut-outs.

Samsung E61 e-book reader outed, brings physical QWERTY keyboard to lineup

The pair of Samsung-borne e-book readers we espied at CES just became a trio. E6 and E101, please give a round of applause your new on-screen brother, the E61 (pictured next to Kindle). What sets this guy apart from the rest is a physical QWERTY keyboard, but otherwise boasts a 6-inch, 600 x 800 resolution screen and all other amenities found in the E6, including a removable battery should you find yourself thousands of pages into a book and no charger in sight. PC Professionale was on hand to get hands on with the device, and we also spotted a touchscreen keyboard on the E101 — nothing to write about, but it’s good seeing just how we’ll be navigating the dictionary when needed. No word on its release date, so for now we’re gonna assume it falls under the same “early 2010″ timeframe we heard with the other two.

Microsoft Arc Keyboard hands-on

February 3, 2010 by gizmo

Microsoft’s Best Buy-exclusive Arc Keyboard still won’t be hitting stores for another couple of weeks (February 21st, to be specific), but we were lucky enough to get our hands on one a little early, and figured we’d share a few impressions with you, the keyboard-using masses. The first thing you’ll notice when seeing the keyboard in person is that it’s smaller than even the press photos suggested — basically the same size as your average 15-inch laptop keyboard, with a glossy bezel just big enough to let you pick it up without pressing a key. It’s also undeniably eye-catching, with an “arc” that actually more closely resembles Apple’s Magic Mouse than Microsoft’s own Arc mouse .

Citrix Nirvana phone provides the full desktop experience — BYO keyboard and monitor (video)

Citrix is something of a storied name in the IT industry, once the leader in remote desktop apps, now looking to make a big return with the Nirvana phone concept. The idea has been around for awhile, but partnership with mobile virtualization gurus Open Kernel Labs gives it new legs. Nirvana phone is just a minimum set of fairly achievable hardware specs (528MHz ARM processor, 256MB ROM, 192MB RAM) required to facilitate remote access to a full desktop. The idea is you simply plug the phone into a monitor, then connect to a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse (or use the phone as a touchpad), and, hey presto, you have a full desktop experience without having a full desktop. In theory you could pocket your smartphone and leave that clunky Targus bag in your cubicle, but should duty call while you’re away we’re not entirely sure where you’re going to find a disused monitor and keyboard ripe for the plugging. Still, it’s interesting tech, demonstrated remotely for you below.

Apple didn’t give us a great amount of time with its newly unveiled iPad today, and as you’ve likely seen, we spent the bulk of our allotment touching the unit itself .

Great Wall Cross PC U150 Ion-izes the Eee Keyboard

January 25, 2010 by gizmo

Our interest in the ASUS Eee Keyboard has thoroughly waned as the Atom N270-based internals have aged with time, but the new Cross PC U150 from China’s Great Wall puts a little juice back into the remixed C64 form factor with the addition of NVIDIA Ion graphics. Sadly there’s no battery or wireless HD out, and it doesn’t support dual displays — the internal 5-inch touchscreen on the right shuts off when an external monitor is connected — so we’re not sold on this guy as a lap-based HTPC, but we’re willing to check it out. Anyone got 3888 Yuan ($570) and an extra ticket to China

HP EliteBook 8440w lives up to its “workstation” title, says the reviewing masses

Since the royal unveiling of HP’s six new Elitebooks and ProBooks last week, the Elitebook 8440w (w standing for workstation) has been making the review rounds, and receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from the chaps at Notebook Review, LAPTOP and Computer Shopper. All were impressed by the Core i7-620M and NVIDIA Quadro FX 380M power that’s been crammed into the 14-inch chassis, but unsurprisingly that causes some warm underside temperatures. Other than that, the 8440w received high praise for its durable gunmetal-build and “exceedingly” comfortable keyboard, but the touchpad was noted as being too small. Actually, the guys over at Notebook Review even go as far to say that the laptop would be “absolutely perfect” if that pad and its buttons weren’t so squished. Now that’s quite a bold statement. All in all, the 8440w seems like a solid and very mobile workstation, but hit up the sources if you’re dying to know more about the $1,650 rig.

ThinkPad X100e does the video unboxing thing in glorious white

January 7, 2010 by gizmo

Deep down, we all sort of knew that the day would come when a ThinkPad would finally feature more color than its signature keyboard highlights — and the company obliged such trepidations with not one but two new color-loving ‘Pads announced here at CES. One of them, the “definitely not a netbook” X100e, has already found itself been candidly photographed while making its way out of a retail box. Featuring a comprehensive gallery of angles of the new machine — which include some comparison shots making the X200 look bulky — the read link should provide plenty for the ThinkPad loyalist that wants to be in the know. If you want it quick and dirty though, video of the unboxing awaits just past the break.

[Thanks, xleung]

ASUS Eee Keyboard gets a price and launch date

January 6, 2010 by gizmo

We saw it clear the FCC a few months back, and retooled slightly shortly thereafter, and it looks like ASUS’ Eee Keyboard is now finally nearing an actual release. The latest official word is that it’ll roll out sometime in February, and run between $499 and $599. No more last minute spec changes from the looks of it, which means you can expect the usual Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD (upgradeable to 32GB), and a built-in battery that promises to last for four hours — and, of course, that 5-inch touchscreen. Considering how long this thing has been floating about, however, we’ll have to see this one for ourselves to fully believe it.
