Digicam hack simultaneously captures stills and high speed video on the cheap

When researchers at the University of Oxford needed to precisely sync high-speed video with high resolution stills, they had a hell of a time finding an off-the-shelf solution that worked with any degree of accuracy. Instead, the crazy kids hacked together a home cinema projector and a consumer-level digicam to split every frame of video captured by the camera into sixteen frames (albeit with lower resolution).

Tech accessories can spice up holiday list
As much as I love buying big-ticket items such as TVs, computers, cell phones and cameras, I also love buying accessories for those items just as much, maybe even more.

Project Natal prototype spotted on a makeshift Gorillapod stand, sensing your every move

We’re not sure if this is a hint toward the final form factor, or merely the simplest conglomeration of parts available to get working Project Natal sensors in the hands of developers, but The Seattle Times has posted a picture today a developer prototype of the motion-sensing unit. The seems clearly slimmer in proportion than the soundbar-styled renders we’ve seen thus far, but also quite a bit different than the hacked together hardware used for the Jimmy Fallon demo of the tech

Do high tech gadgets gifts count as marketing expenses?

January 28, 2010 by gizmo

I am a self employed high-tech consultant with an international practice. I would like to thank some of the great people who help me get and/or execute contracts by offering them high-tech gifts like an iPod, or a digital camera. For tax purposes, can I consider these gifts as marketing expenses and deduct them as such on my Schedule C? If so, is there any limitation on the price of each of those gifts (a digital camera is in the $200-$300 range, same with an iPod)?

Apple iPad tech specs: rumor vs. reality scorecard

Remember that history of Apple tablet rumors we concocted for you just the other day? Well, we’re here to take score now, folks. As you can see from the handy (and magical) chart above, Taiwan Economic News came pretty close to nailing the iPad’s specs back September: built-in HSDPA, custom P.A. Semi system on a chip (with the fancy new name Apple A4), 9.6-inch size, February unveiling, and hey — they were pretty close on that $799 – $999 pricing too. And while iLounge was wrong about some things, they certainly hit this one out of the park: “It’s a big iPhone, but it’s not a big iPhone.” We’re going to let you dig into the chart here for yourselves to see who got what right — and who was terribly, terribly wrong.

Here are just a few of the no-shows today, however — no camera, no multitasking, no phone, no Verizon, no iPhone OS 4.0, and no Flash anywhere to be seen. There were also no MacBook Pro spec bumps in sight, and no iLife to be found. Well, let’s just try to be happy with what we did get, okay?
